EdgeSlider is a tiny menu bar app for Mac. Rest a finger on the left or right edge and slide. No keys, no menus, no reaching for the keyboard.
The edges of the trackpad become sliders. Everything else on the pad works exactly as before.
Put one finger down on the far left edge for brightness or the far right edge for volume.
The level follows your finger, with a small click at every step and a bar on screen showing where you are.
The bar slides away on its own. Your pointer never moved.
Built to stay out of your way until you reach for it.
Left edge for brightness, right edge for volume. Swap them in one click if you prefer it the other way round.
Feel each step through the trackpad, with a firmer bump at the minimum and maximum. Off, Light or Strong.
While you slide, the cursor is pinned in place, so you never lose what you were pointing at.
Swipe along the bottom edge to skip to the next or previous track in Music, Spotify and other players.
Double-tap the top-right corner to mute. Off by default, because taps can also click when Tap to Click is on.
A touch has to land on the edge and then move before it does anything, and you can limit it to the lower part of the pad.
Plus adjustable sensitivity and edge width, a show-percentage switch, launch at login and automatic updates. It lives in the menu bar and nowhere else.
To see your fingers on the trackpad edge, EdgeSlider uses Apple's undocumented multitouch interface, which the App Store doesn't allow. It's signed and notarized by Apple like any other download, so it opens without warnings. A future macOS update could change that interface and break the app.
Volume works with whatever output you use. Brightness changes the built-in display only.
The strip sends the standard Next and Previous media keys, so it needs a player with a next track, such as a playlist or Music or Spotify. A single video on its own has nothing to skip to. macOS may also ask for permission the first time it sends the keys.
Open the menu bar icon, choose Settings, and switch on Open at Login. For this to work reliably, keep EdgeSlider in your Applications folder.
No. EdgeSlider has no accounts, no analytics and makes no network connections. Your settings are stored on your Mac.
